History and Milestones

1981 The University of East Asia (UEA), the predecessor of UM, was founded. The Computer Service Bureau (CSB), the predecessor of ICTO was also established. The WANG/VS system for information management systems was set up.
1982 The Commodore Microcomputers were set up for academic purpose.
1985 The NCR 9300 was set up for academic purposes.
1988 The first PC LAN with Novell Netware and Token Ring network was established for academic purposes.
1990 Personal computers were allocated to user departments for office automation. An office automation team was established to support the office computers.
1991 UM was the first institution in Macao to connect to the Internet and use e-mail service by connecting to the BITNET (Because It’s Time Network) and HARNET (Hong Kong Academic and Research Network).
1992 The first Class B IPv4 address in Macao was assigned to UM.
1993 UM established the first campus network with fibre optic architecture in Macao, and also the first institution to widely deploy the client-server-based information system using Oracle.
1994 The first lease line to the Internet in Macao was established and the first web server with the domain name “.mo” was set up. UM also operated the Macao Network Information Centre (MONIC) to manage the “.mo” domain.
1996 The Lotus Notes platform was used for the staff email system and for the development of document databases and workflow system to initiate paperless concept.
1997 E-Learning was initiated by the installation of multimedia equipment in classrooms, the introduction of video conferencing system, video streaming and online education technologies. SI Web, the web-based Student Online Enrolment and Add/Drop system was launched.
1998 The first high speed ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network was established in Macao with a speed of 622Mbps, the highest standard of ATM network technology at the time. The WebCT web-based e-Learning platform was launched.
1999 The Net-Home 56K dial-up service was set up to access the Internet and Intranet from home.
2000 The E-Campus concept was introduced, and UM was the first institution in Macao to use the contactless smart card as a campus card. The backbone of the campus network was upgraded to Gigabit Ethernet.
2001 The E-purse was integrated into the UM campus card to enable small amount purchases. The first generation wireless network with IEEE 802.11b standard was implemented.
2002 The first remote mirroring storage area network in Macao and Southeast Asia was built.
2003 The Virtual Private Network (VPN) service was launched for access to Intranet resources off-campus.
2005 The traditional PBX communication system was consolidated with IP telephone system.
2006 Computer Service Bureau (CSB) was renamed as Information and Communication Technology Office (ICTO).
2007 ICTO joined the Joint Universities Computer Centre (JUCC) as an affiliate member.
2008 The new e-Learning platform UMMoodle was introduced.
2009 The first Macao institution to participate in the international wireless roaming infrastructure “eduroam” and took the initiative to manage the infrastructure for the Macao region. The backbone of the campus network was upgraded to 10 Gbps Ethernet.
2011 The operation of MONIC was handed over to the Macao SAR government.
2012 The first generation of High Performance Computing Cluster (HPCC) “Pearl” was launched.
2013 The new data centers and network infrastructure were setup in the current campus.
2014 All ICT services were successfully migrated from the old to the current campus.
2015 The information security team was formed.
2016 ITIL best practices were introduced for IT service management. The second generation of HPCC “Jade” with GPU support was set up.
2017 A data warehouse for data analysis and reporting was established to facilitate decision making. UMPASS was introduced for single sign-on.
2018 UM domain name was changed to “um.edu.mo”. The Open Data API platform was launched for UM public data. myUM Portal was launched for quick and easy access to various web-based services.
2019 A new version of Student Information App (SI App) was launched with a mobile-friendly interface and enriched features.
2020 Data centre services were certified with ISO 27001:2013.
2021 The GovPay from DSF (Financial Services Bureau) was adopted for online payments.
2022 Wi-Fi 6 standard was introduced for wireless network. Internet bandwidth was increased to 10Gbps.
2023 All Wireless Access Points in Staff Quarters were upgraded to support Wi-Fi 6 standard. New all-flash storage system was implemented with active-active data center design to improve access performance and data availability.
